a small group of us visited operation shanti yesterday thinking we would be teaching the children some shiva chants in celebration of sivaratri. we guided them most awkwardly through one chant and then asked if they could teach us a chant they knew. what followed was a chain of devotional songs that spanned an hour. in the intervals, two or three children would quietly discuss what to sing next and within seconds they had begun. in a few more seconds the entire group of 25 or so children would be synchronized in song. their angelic voices filled the room, spread across the hard concrete floors, and left us, the adults, mouths closed, our chant sheets resting unused on the floor.
yesterday we had more to learn by listening than by teaching.
